Awards are received by west Bromwich community heroes - Sandwell Council (press release)

West Bromwich celebrated people and organizations that help make the town good at a "wonderful" and "inspirational" group awards celebration on Friday (22 March) night. Fifty finalists across a variety of types were thanked due to their achievements at the West Bromwich Community Recognition Awards. The big event, organised by Sandwell Council's cities and neighbourhoods staff and local councillors, happened at West Bromwich Town Hall. Inspite of the climate, over 200 invited guests attended the night of celebration and amusement with family and friends, 'MC' Doug Parker and special guest Blind Dave Heeley. Councillor David Hosell, town cause member, said: "This was an excellent night and the perfect chance to observe the town and scream about what makes West Bromwich good. "We recognized how far we've are available in the past few years, and the effort of numerous organizations and people towards our development. "We received some wonderful nominations - and our 50 finalists are all hard-working people or organisations that have gone above and beyond in their contribution to town. "We have become grateful to Queen's Square Shopping Centre, Tesco, West Bromwich Building Society, McDonald's, West Bromwich Albion FC and Dunton Environmental for taking part in and supporting the recognition event. "I would also prefer to thank everybody else who braved the weather to be part of an unforgettable and inspiring morning, as well as dozens of who helped organise and host the event and performed music on the night." The raffle, backed by West Bromwich Albion with two corporate seats to a match and authorized baseball, increased A113 for the Mayor of Sandwell's charities, Help for Heroes and Different Strokes. Special Prize Winners Jean Hartill "Carol took the position of secretary from the start and spent some time working tirelessly ever since, raising the profile of the party and promoting the park at every opportunity, her title becoming associated with Dartmouth Park." Ann Poynton and Rita Hicken "Rita and Ann are uniting people and keeping the community spirit alive and kicking - young, oldies or in-betweens. They've worked tirelessly for our area for over 17 years." Craig Jackson "Barry has been chosen to make Bustleholme neighborhood open a better position to space. He has light emitting diode a little number of volunteers to greatly help establish what is now known as Haywoods Nature Trail. Todd works all year round to steadfastly keep up the type walk, rendering it a safe, welcoming and beautiful place for local people and visitors." Terry Price "Terry has been researching and writing about West Bromwich for several years, and donates the gains from sale of his books to charities. His books provide the real history of West Bromwich to the city and promote local pride in the region by which they live." Margaret Whitehouse "Margaret liaises between tenants and the authority to make sure attributes are held to a significant standard. She chairs the Charlemont Farm TRA, no mean task. For several years, she has and still devotes her time to the survival of local tenants." Saffron Hicken "Saffron is just a shining example of an optimistic peer and an asset in her neighborhood. She was among five who started the Cre-8 group in 2006 and gives up hours of her time for you to work with young people, encouraging them to dance, keep healthier and encourage pride in themselves." Raaj FM "Raaj FM is just a community light emitting diode radio station run by volunteers. They help support the council and police with regional jobs and keep consitently the Sandwell community in touch with what is going on." Callam Johnson "West Bromwich Albion and England under 17s player has been called up to the WBA 1st group team for the overall game with Stoke. Callam is definitely an ambassador for SalterSports at Gorge Salter Academy who assists project manage the program and has secured support from Coca Cola."
