NCAA hits Saint Mary's with recruiting violations

MORAGA, Calif. (AP) a The NCAA has located Saint Mary's on four years' probation for "failure to check its men's basketball program," reducing scholarships after it says the definite mid-major power determined many recruiting violations. The NCAA Committee on Infractions also mentioned Friday that Gaels coach Randy Bennett "acted unethically in his employment of international prospects" and "failed to promote an atmosphere for compliance." Bennett won't be permitted to hire off campus and will provide a five-game suspension next time. Saint Mary's will still be permitted to be involved in its meeting tournament and the NCAA tournament, but can't perform in preseason or in-season tournaments. This program also will have a lowering of scholarships from 13 to 11 for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 periods.
