Why Manager David Moyes Needs to Sign a New Deal At Everton
There has been much discuss the legacy David Moyes would leave at Everton if come early july he was to disappear. Some say Everton should really be happy for the way by which they have been established by him in the Premier League. The more ambitious say he will leave Everton with an aging group bereft of a winning mentality. But aside from your view of Moyes and the job he has done at Everton, in between the present development of chopping and changing your manager, eleven years at one club is just a momentous achievement. However now, with Moyes waiting on the restoration of his contract (which expires come july 1st), it's lead to discussions about the potential of a manager who's used in such high regard by those within the overall game. That, hopefully for Evertonians, will be in addition to the A8m Everton looked set to spend the in January for Leroy Fer. Fellaini won't represent as big a loss for Everton as many may assume. Many Evertonians will be happy to see the Belgian go a' undoubtedly if it is a choice between him and Leighton Baines. Other players may also play a far more important role next time, that ought to fill the space left by the departing Belgian. Kevin Mirallas are certain to get better still, Victor Anichebe is starting to realize his potential and Ross Barkley appears to be finding his feet. With this specific at heart, why would Moyes get? But behind 30 points and 13 assists from Stephen Curry (who turned his left leg in the next quarter, but returned for the last), the Warriors stepped inside the Nuggets' house and beat them at their very own game. Destiny-laden vibes were circulating through the flowing crowds from the very start of the first Masters 1000 of the 2013 season.
Nadal received a walkover into the fourth round, and Federer avoided a rematch against his Rotterdam conqueror in Julien Benneteau. The prospect of Switzerland's Roger and Spain's Rafa meeting in the quarterfinals became more than mouth-watering as the potential encounter crept nearer.
Then came the gargantuan obstacles in Stanislas Wawrinka and Ernests Gulbis for Federer and Nadal, respectively, producing two very enthralling and heart-stopping matches that went down to the wire.
But, true to their word, the powers that be once again seemingly disrupted the momentum of the underdogs in each three-set match, halting their progress toward the biggest wins of their careers with an assortment of nervy errors to hand victory to "Fedal."
Now the living legends will play once again come Thursday night on the hard courts of the BNP Paribas Open, not before 7:00 p.m. PST (10:00 p.m. EST), for their first showdown in exactly a year (with Federer defeating Nadal in the semis at the tournament's 2012 edition, 6-3, 6-4), and the 29th career meeting between the two promises to be special.
The matchup is impeccably timed, falling smack in the middle of Rafa's scrupulously followed comeback to the big time and Roger's underwhelming monotony—and possible injury—to the beginning of his 2013 campaign. More importantly, though, it is the most critical match of the year, thus far.
With questions surrounding the health of both champions, who together have collected a ridiculous haul of 28 Grand Slam titles since 2003 (that's 28 of the last 39 slam tournaments in that time frame, in case you were counting), the match will prove essential in both the short- and long-term for either Federer or Nadal and their ensuing seasons.
For Nadal, the stakes are crystal clear: a chance to prove that his seven-month hiatus from tennis due to a left knee injury is no longer holding him back from returning to the top of the game.
In this sense, he should enter the match with little pressure, knowing that playing his best will be enough to solidify a successful week in light of his iffy knees, regardless of whether he rises or falls. A win reaffirms his dominance of tennis, with only World No. 1 Novak Djokovic and World No. 3 Andy Murray left to vanquish.
Though inconsistent and uncertain in his match against Gulbis, who bludgeoned the ball with fierce backhands and took reckless cuts in his return game, Nadal showed his fighting spirit still has the ability to withstand such a barrage.
For Federer, however, the burden is far heavier: At 31 years old (set to turn 32 in August), it looks as though time may finally be catching up to the immensely successful Swiss. Known for his stunning consistency and longevity, the 17-time Grand Slam champion has fallen in questionable encounters to Benneteau and Tomas Berdych.
It isn't the losses that's so concerning, but rather the manner in which he was defeated: after either relinquishing a winning position or allowing his opponent to dictate proceedings, both incredibly incongruous happenings in Federer's game.
Whether or not the Swiss' recent results are directly related to a recurring back injury is yet to be seen. It was clear in his fourth-round match, though, that Federer wasn't gliding across the court like his usual light-footed self. Needless to say, tennis pundits have time and time again been proven wrong by a suddenly sprightly Federer following a near-exit.
This famous matchup has been discussed ad nauseam since their first battle in 2004, and so the general winning tactics need not be iterated once more. Instead, it's more telling to focus on what will be newly different in Thursday night's quarterfinal match.
Federer won't need to rely as much on his serve as he has had to in past clashes against his greatest rival in Nadal, as Rafa isn't returning nearly as well as his 11 Grand Slam titles suggest.
Rather than trying to blow Nadal off the court, Federer might, instead, attempt to break down the Spaniard's backhand side with varied aggression and slice, as Rafa seems to be struggling with lower-placed shots this week on the hard courts.
As per usual, Federer's backhand is paramount to his success, and he'll need to avoid being pinned in the corner by taking chances to open up the court when he's given the opportunity. Striking the ball early and on the rise has long since been one of Roger's biggest strengths, and he'll need to be hitting outright and controlling Nadal's movement from the get-go.
Against a fit Federer—should the Swiss Maestro come into the match feeling limber and loose—Nadal will need to be much steadier off his backhand wing than he has shown, thus far, at Indian Wells. Rafa will have to make a concerted effort to stretch Federer to his forehand side using his abbreviated backhand, as Fed struggled in moving toward the deuce court in his match against Wawrinka.
It will also be to Nadal's benefit to avoid protracted rallies, a strategy Rafa has employed his entire career. Though he shouldn't eliminate the method altogether, Nadal has done well finishing rallies with punishing forehands since his return to tennis a month ago.
Keeping his knees in good condition should be his top priority, and the confidence he stands to gain from taking a major aspect of Federer's game away from the Swiss is doubly favorable.
Ultimately, when the two wounded warriors do finally engage in battle, it will likely come down to intangibles. Resolve and desire will never abandon these two all-time greats, regardless of pain or injury, and their legendary history speaks volumes about their zeal.
And as Roger and Rafa may truly be entering into an inevitable juncture in their careers, in which together they fade into a picturesque sunset, it would be a shame if we denied them proper appreciation and ovation. Simply enjoy.

Biggest Questions for the Washington Redskins Heading into the 2013 NFL Draft
Strapped with an $18 million cap penalty, head coach Mike Shanahan and the Redskins front office have been forced to remain thrifty in choosing who they can bring in and sign. In turn, the draft becomes that much more important.
Holes to fill, decisions to make and seven draft choices. Here's a handful of questions the Redskins need to ponder heading into April 25.
Although much of the draft talk surrounding the Redskins is about the secondary and offensive line, the linebacker position is still a critical one.
London Fletcher is returning for his 16th season, Brian Orakpo is entering the final year of his contract and the recently re-signed Rob Jackson will miss the first four games of the season after failing a drug test.
With plenty of storylines to throw around, it will be interesting to see if the Redskins address the position this April to help build on the structure they already have with guys like Perry Riley, Keenan Robinson and, presumably, Orakpo.
Re-signing Fred Davis last week was a huge get for the Redskins. Despite just a one-year deal, Davis adds a wrinkle to the offense and is committed to proving himself in 2013 in order to land a much bigger contract next season.
In addition to Davis, retaining restricted free agent Logan Paulsen also served as a solid move at the tight end position. Although not the receiving threat of Davis, Paulsen is a hard worker and a key blocker in the team's offense.
But that Fred Davis deal is still a one-year show-me contract. Is anyone positive he'll regain his explosiveness following an Achilles tear? Can he return to his early 2012 form?
Let's say Davis does have a good comeback year in 2013. Oftentimes it's the second year following an injury that's the most crucial. And next spring, Davis is going to demand top dollar if he does perform well.
Assuming the Redskins stick to the script and think long-term, taking advantage of a deep tight end class in this year's draft (with value in mind, of course) would be wise.
There's no question the Redskins need to address the secondary in the coming weeks. They can afford to spend three or four picks on the back of the defensive.
The Redskins were held tight in free agency, with their biggest splash coming by way of cornerback E.J. Biggers. And while the visit from veteran Antoine Winfield last week is good news, there's still no deal done.
On the other hand, safety Brandon Meriweather is assumed to make a full recovery after tearing his ACL last year during an injury-filled first season in Washington. He restructured his contract this offseason.
Coverage will improve by way of an effective pass rush. A quality safety can help too. But what the Redskins ultimately need to think about when they turn in their first draft selection at No. 51 is what position holds more value at that point in the draft. This class has plenty of talent at both safety and corner.
Here are two of my favorites: Jonathan Cyprien (although it'd be a miracle for the Skins if he fell to No. 51) and Darius Slay.
While it may not be riot material, the signings of free agents Tony Pashos and Jeremy Trueblood aren't all that exciting. Nor is retaining last year's starter at right tackle, Tyler Polumbus.
Don't forget about last year's draft pick, either: Tom Compton. He should receive his fair shot in camp to start on the right side next season.
While it's likely the Redskins address the offensive line at some point this April, not seeing a tackle prospect wouldn't be a surprise. Given the team needs and depth at other positions in this class, the Redskins could be satisfied with adding a versatile interior blocker in the later rounds.
Assuming the Redskins brass agrees, adding speed on offense will be an interesting process to observe in this draft.
As mentioned before, re-signing tight end Fred Davis was a great move. But there's no promises of what he returns with following an Achilles tear last season.
And that's why the question isn't so much about adding new speed. I'm sure Shanahan and the coaching staff would agree.
There's a ton of hype surrounding West Virginia's Tavon Austin as the best offensive weapon in this class. He's, of course, a first-round talent and unattainable for the Redskins.

Hockey Player Not Pleased By Woman Reporter Suggesting He Illegally Chopped Someone In The Back
Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith got played pretty badly by Daniel Sedin last night, letting the Maple Leafs forward slip by him for a breakaway goal in the second period. Keith's response was to chop Sedin in the back with his hockey stick. Classy! And what happened when Keith was asked about the play by reporter Karen Thompson after the game? He delivered an equally classy quip.
First, for context, here's the play. The announcers quibble over whether the uncalled chop was hard enough to warrant a penalty — because this is hockey, and unless your victim is leaking spinal fluid it's no big deal.
A classic athlete-reporter exchange, in which Keith defends his actions by saying "What do you know, writer-person? You are simply a writer-person. I am a hockey-person, and thus my hockey actions cannot be questioned." Except this one was tinged with the hint of dickishness that comes specifically from a man talking down to a woman just doing her job.
