West Bromwich Albion: Chris Lepkowski shows on the loss of Dave Matthews - Manchester Mail

I can't remember the exact game, nor the day, but I do know Albion had lost. And didnat the people know about it. H Megsonas face was red, the mood was black. No one dared to speak. This might be an average dressing area throughout the state during the time. Issues probably havenat changed much since basketball started. But finger and beyond the anger pointing a solitary figure was getting on along with his job - attempting to raise morale, but knowing how to react at the correct times and when to say the right things. It was initially I met Dave Matthews. Hurting when his staff got crushed, here was a man the people could confide in, a man the boss could find peace in, and a man who knew every one at the club and had an instant ahi, how are you?a for every visitor to working out ground. Privy to every team-talk, a buddy to all in the dressing area, Dave, Albionas former package person will need to have heard it all over the years: the tub-thumping team-talks, the festivities after campaigns, the despair after demotions, the awkwardness of beats, the bust-ups, the pleasure, and much more. His was the friendly face of a sometimes fierce attire area dynamic. A place where you desired your wits about you. A place increasingly populated by well-rewarded teenage boys, often with egos. However his share remained high. It absolutely was with sadness and great surprise to all when he died late on Sunday. As the news appeared on Monday, administrators and people queued as much as spend their very own gratitude to a guy who was branded as aMr Albiona by Ron Atkinson. Dave has his place in Albion folklore - among the few those who does so without having kicked a ball for the membership or stood on the touchline. Albionas longest-serving player of contemporary times was Tony Brown. Bomber spent just under two decades at the club. Joe Reader, beginning in 1885, had an organization which lasted 65 years with the club, as a instructor, player and then as a steward. Alan Everiss joined the team as a clerk in 1933, he became then secretary, assistant secretary and in the course of time getting into the boardroom. He left throughout the 1980s. Ephraim Smith also used over 50 years at the club but, again, in an administrative role. But no body had five years of usage of the inner sanctum of Albionas dressing room, the absolute most precious sacristy of any soccer club. Dave was to serve under 24 executives and a few nanny businesses. He began under Gordon Clark, making the team during Roy Hodgsonas cause. He organized the package for four main glass finals, six aggressive Wembley games, several promotions and occasional relegations. Semi-final despair was shared by him in 1969, 78, 82 and 2008. He jumped for joy when Igor Balis obtained THAT charge and was as over come whilst the next fan when results went Albionas way on the last time in 2005. Dave claimed one of his best thoughts was being invited to observe on the message after Albionas 1993 Play-Off win against Port Vale, taking his place on the post-match Wembley team photo. In March 2011, over 350 supporters, shareholders, players, former people, board members and administrators joined him for a 50th wedding dinner at The Hawthorns. It absolutely was joined by some 60 former people and eight professionals. John Giles, John Atkinson, Ossie Ardiles, John Talbot, Keith Burkinshaw, Bobby Gould, Tony Mowbray and Roy Hodgson. They cleared their journals because of their respect for Dave. He was higher than a mere kitman, who just cared for t-shirts, clothes and the remainder. He was a confidante to those that mattered and a devotee to the team he admired and loved. Dave had stories to share with. he should but he never divulged more. He was party to outstanding drama through the duration of his time at the club. Nearly all of it kept within the four walls. He also held his own diaries of his time at the club. I'd imagine that perhaps one page would be an interesting insight in to his working life. Yet I doubt there will be much pessimism. In all my years of talking to Dave I donat recall him being critical or angry in public places. There should have been frustrating times throughout his career. Not once did he speak out of turn. Of further disappointment is that Dave was along the way of publishing his memoirs. Penned by ghostwriter David Instone, the book was due out and quite definitely work-in-progress later this season. Whether Daveas history will ever hits the shelves remains to be seen. But must it do so, it might just be the best homage of the lot.
