First chart Federer looked at after Nishikori loss @ 2013 Madrid Open: Points to defend moving forward. Why? To avoid facing the top three in the second round. Opening?

With what Federer has showcased so far this season, following looks a tall order to just match. All that without even inserting the strides the top three are expected to make for their own specific individual reasons as the season wears on. Even though the other three - with the exception of Murray - have similar standards to live up to this season, the likelihood of them reaching that high - at least - is far greater. And then, of course, you have the Nadal factor of having not played AT ALL after Wimbledon.

So there's no mercy from other end to make up for the small margin of error at your own. With youngsters like Raonic, Nishikori, Dimitrov etc. coming into their own, ploughing through early rounds for Federer may not be that much of a Slam dunk anymore.
