Manchester United FC boss Sir Alex Ferguson helps Cardiff City promotion bid - WalesOnline

Malky Mackay has revealed Cardiff  City's secret weapon in their chase for  promotion to the Premier League –  legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Mackay's Bluebirds can take a huge  step towards the top flight by winning  at third-placed Watford today  (5.20pm) – and 11 points from their  remaining seven games will guarantee promotion.

And Mackay yesterday disclosed  that Ferguson, like himself a son of  Glasgow, took time out from United's  march towards Premier League glory  recently to talk Cardiff City and the  Championship.

"We had a conversation about our  promotion hopes a couple of weeks  ago," said Mackay ahead of his return  to former club Watford.

"He's arguably the best British manager of all time and if you can't learn  from someone like that, I'm not sure  who you can learn from."

Ferguson's faith in City's training  facilities at their Vale of Glamorgan  base saw him bring his United stars to  South Wales towards the end of last  season as the title race neared its  climax.

The 71-year-old put his players  through their paces here for a few  days while also taking in a spying  mission down the M4 at Swansea.

Striker Fraizer Campbell is set to  miss out at Watford today with an  ankle injury, allowing Peter Whittingham to win a recall in a five-man  Bluebirds midfield.
