Oregon Football: Who Will Backup Marcus Mariota at QB for the Ducks?

With the departure of Bryan Bennett, Oregon's No. 2 quarterback in 2012, it begs the question: Who will win the competition to take over Bennett's place as starter Marcus Mariota's copy this year? If this picture of Mariota on the ground during January's Fiesta Bowl offers you the heebie-jeebies, there is reasonable for that. Quarterbacks are often at risk in Oregon's spread option offense, especially a QB with the running skills of Mariota. As Instructor Mark Helfrich said within an meeting with Aaron Fentress of The Oregonian: "As we've seen here, very nearly without exceptiona'knock on wooda'you need multiple quarterback." Let's discuss and examine the 2 scholarship quarterbacksAwho would step up ifa'knock on wood (you're not irrational, are you? No, it does not count if you always wear your lucky 'O' earrings to games; that is just being prudent )a'Mariota were to drop at any stage in the 2013 season. Similarities Barry Lockie image courtesy 247Sports.com There are similarities between the two contenders, Jeff Lockie and Jake Rodrigues,Ato be Marcus Mariota's copy. Both QBs are redshirt freshmen. Both are from upper Californiaa'Lockie from Danville and Rodrigues from Rocklin. Both are even related in size; Lockie is 6'2", 195 pounds, and Rodrigues is one inch taller and weighs 218 pounds. Based on Rivals.com, Lockie was a 3-star recruit and Rodrigues a 4-star appearing out of high school. It is interesting to notice that both Rodrigues and Lockie were recruited bya'wait for ita'Mark Helfrich. Here are some features from Lockie's high school career: Differences Mike Rodrigues photo courtesy 247Sports.com Based on their recruiting information, Jake Rodrigues is thought to be the better player and features a stronger arm than Lockie. But, Rodrigues suffered a fibulaAhis senior year of high school and has already established an extended therapy process, which helped Lockie to get in more training time with the Ducks. Lockie was also on the traveling group during the 2012 year. Based on his high school stats, Rodrigues seems to be more of a quarterback than Lockie, whose stats are more heavily weighted to the passing game than working. Throughout his senior year, Rodrigues used for 2,036 yards and 26 touchdowns, while dashing for 684 yards and 15 TDs. In contrast, according to GoDucks.com, Lockie concluded 234 passes forA3,278 passing yards with 31 touchdowns, while rushing for only 136 yards and sevenATDs inAhis senior year. With the Ducks' current unpleasant system, Rodrigues is apparently a better match. Everything you don't know is simply how much each person wants it and why. Motivation is crucial in kids at this age. One player might be going all out because his parents expect it of him, and his competitor might need it significantly more than he wants to breathea'there is just no solution to know very well what is pushing Lockie and Rodrigues. How About the Actual Freshman? Damion Hobbs photograph courtesy 247Sports.com You know that the quarterback who takes his high school team all the best way to the Texas 5A state tournament gameAmust not be chopped liver, if you know such a thing at all about Texas. Damion Hobbs isn't chopped liver. With almost 30 TDs and just under 3,000 total yards, Hobbs is the real deal at QB. He seems to be more of a true dual-threat quarterback than Lockie is, and his passing versus. Working numbers tend to be more in accordance with Rodrigues.' Hobbs was also hired by Helfrich. Hobbs is quite athletic, and could be given a chance to see what he is able to do at other positions for the Ducks, a Daryle Hawkins (recruited at quarterback, but now on the roster at wide receiver). But when neither Lockie or Rodrigues step-up in 2013, don't be surprised to see Hobbs sticking at QB and using his freshman redshirt. Intangibles Jonathan Ferrey/Getty Images In accordance with studies, both Rodrigues and Lockie are nice young ones and class functions. Lockie's tweets are rare and usually good-natured, unlike some Ducks we might mention but will not go there today.ARodrigues does not appear to twitter (which can mean that he's very, very smart.) Lockie clearly knows which side his bread is buttered on, as evidenced by this twitter on January 20: In accordance with Helfrich in Fentress's post, both people have put in extra work both on their bodies and in the film area. Helfrich added that your competition is "wide open." Honestly, this opposition sounds like a carbon copy of Mariota vs. Bennett: two ready, intelligent, likeable men who can probably both get the work done. Depth Data Chris Rodrigues picture courtesy 247Sports.com Let us go way to avoid it on a limb here and task that Marcus Mariota could be the starting quarterback for the Oregon Ducks. Here is the rest of your estimated 2013 level chart at the QB position with their jersey figures, for anyone of you who'll attend the spring game: 2. Jake Rodriguesa'No. 3 3. Barry Lockiea'No. 17 4. Damion Hobbs (redshirt )a'NA The opposition is close, but Rodrigues is really a better match the Ducks' offense and the No. 2 position is his to reduce. I reserve my mind to be changed by the right following the spring sport. Kay Jennings is just a member of the Football Writers Association of America.
