Rooney missed FA Cup defeat after picking up groin injury while playing for ... - Daily Mail

Wayne Rooney's mystery groin injury was picked up during the final minutes of England's 1-1 draw with Montenegro last Tuesday.

Rooney, who missed Saturday's 1-0 win at Sunderland and today's defeat in the FA Cup at Chelsea, complained of some discomfort in the dressing room.

Manchester United had kept Rooney's injury quiet until the teams were announced for yesterday's FA Cup quarter-final replay at Stamford Bridge.

Rooney has a 'slight tear' to his groin and United manager Sir Alex Ferguson decided not to risk him against Chelsea.

Although Rooney could have played through the pain barrier, United's medical staff feared that he would have risked further aggravating the injury.

There were some surprise yesterday when Rooney was omitted from United's squad, but the striker has a genuine injury.

He was substituted during England's 8-0 World Cup qualifying win against San Marino to save him for the clash with Montenegro.

He scored the opening goal in the City Stadium in Podgorica on Tuesday evening and played the full 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw.

Rooney made United's medical team aware of the injury when he returned to Carrington and Ferguson decided not to risk as they prepared to play twice in three days.

Rooney, along with Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs and Danny Welbeck, were all rested at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

It was initially thought that Rooney would return to the starting line up, but Ferguson decided not to risk him against Chelsea.

Instead Rooney, who will continue to have treatment on the injury this week, is expected to be fit for Monday's derby.

United face the Barclays Premier League champions at Old Trafford in their next game and Rooney should return for that fixture.
